Hummus Recipe

There are many ways to make delicious hummus and I want to try all the recipes. From roasted red pepper hummus, beetroot hummus, and spicy hummus, to pumpkin hummus and even basil hummus. Many delicious flavors that I want to try and prepare as often as possible. But now I chose to prepare the classic, authentic hummus recipe. Chickpeas are very healthy, being a rich source of protein, healthy fats, fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
It is a very simple and quick recipe to prepare. And the taste is authentic, which fits perfectly for any meal of the day. It is the perfect dish for a tasty breakfast, for a delicious and filling lunch, and even a light snack for a quick dinner when you don’t have much time to cook. I think it’s the recipe that saves us when we have a busy period and don’t have time to cook. Yes, yes, it happens quite often to me too.

Hummus Recipe

Ingredients

250 g dry chickpeas or 400 g chickpeas already boiled from canned
100 g tahini sauce
1/2 of a peeled lemon
3 local garlic cloves
4 tablespoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon of sweet paprika
250 ml hot water
a pinch of salt if you want

 

for decoration, I used some chickpeas, olive oil, chili flakes, chopped parsley, and a pinch of sumac




Method

  • if you use dry chickpeas, it is necessary to leave them hydrated overnight in a bowl of cold water, and the next day boils them for 1-2 hours.
  • if you use already cooked chickpeas from a can, it is only necessary to rinse them with cold water and drain them well. Read the packaging of the product as it can be pre-boiled and still requires boiling according to the instructions.

I used dry chickpeas because I think it’s tastier.

  1. Therefore, soak chickpeas overnight in cold water, and the next morning boil them for 2 hours.
  2. Put half a lemon without the peel, garlic, olive oil, tahini, paprika, a pinch of salt, and 250 ml of hot water (from the water in which the chickpeas were boiled)  in the blender. Blend the ingredients well until homogenized.
  3. Then add the chickpeas and blend again until you got the hummus.
  4. Depending on the desired consistency, you can add another 50 ml of hot water.
  5. Put the hummus in a bowl, and add a little olive oil on top, chili flakes, and some sumac.
  6. I usually serve hummus with pickles – so I skip adding salt as pickles already contain enough salt. Or also if you use canned chickpeas pay attention to the quantities of salt.

It is that type of dish that fulfills all the conditions to be a top dish, namely: it is prepared very simply, very quickly, it is very healthy, it fits in many combinations and the original recipe can be adapted with new ingredients and flavors to be to everyone’s liking.

What should the perfect hummus look like and what can you serve it with?

The perfect hummus should be smooth and creamy. In no case should it be too watery or feel chickpea granules through it.

People usually eat hummus with flatbread or toast. But a healthier and less caloric option is to replace the bread with vegetables, so we can eat the hummus with carrots or capsicum. Hummus also goes well with eggplant or falafel dishes.

Hummus is suitable both for a healthy breakfast, a delicious lunch at the office, or even for a casual dinner with friends or family. I also like to serve it as an appetizer when I have guests and of course, I like to eat it with pickles. That’s how I feel that I find the perfect taste. Another even weirder combination that I love to eat is basil pesto pasta alongside sauerkraut and black pepper salad. For me, it is the perfect taste!

How can we store hummus and on how many days should we consume it?

The hummus is stored in the refrigerator in a hermetically sealed box and must be consumed within a maximum of 5 days.

What sensational flavors can you add to a classic hummus?

I like spicy hummus the most and to get a sensational taste I add a small hot pepper in the blender or a few drops of hot sauce. The hummus with roasted capsicum is also super good. The baking flavor gives the hummus a special taste. Beetroot hummus is also very interesting, tasty, and extra healthy. Another very interesting option is the hummus with sweet potatoes or the one with dried tomatoes and basil. There is of course the avocado hummus version which I admit I haven’t tried yet. It seems to me a more extravagant dish in terms of flavor, but I’m curious to try it.




What are the benefits of consuming hummus?

Although I feel like eating hummus every day, especially since it is also very healthy, I try very hard to limit myself so as not to overdo it because it is also very high in calories. By eating daily we can constantly add a surplus of calories and over time accumulate a few extra pounds. I usually prepare and consume this dish about every two weeks.

Hummus is a rich source of plant-based protein, making it the perfect dish for vegetarians and vegans. It contains many fibers that improve transit and olive oil is rich in antioxidants, being anti-inflammatory like the sesame paste used in its preparation (tahini). It is a preparation that can maintain heart health and has a low glycemic index that can help control blood sugar.
